Benedict Arnold

== Benedict Arnold 1741–1801, American Revolutionary general and traitor, b. Norwich, Conn. As a youth he served for a time in the colonial militia in the French and Indian Wars. He later became a prosperous trader. Early in the Revolution, his expedition against Fort Ticonderoga joined that of Ethan Allen, and the joint command took the fort. Arnold pushed on to the northern end of Lake Champlain, where he destroyed a number of ships and a British fort. In the Quebec campaign, he invaded Canada (1775) by way of the Maine forests. After a grueling march, the exhausted force reached Quebec. Richard Montgomery arrived from Montreal, and the two small armies launched an unsuccessful assault on Dec. 31, 1775. Arnold was wounded but continued the siege until spring, when Sir Guy Carleton forced him back to Lake Champlain. There he built a small fleet that, although defeated, halted the British advance. In Feb., 1777, Congress, despite General Washington's protests, promoted five brigadier generals of junior rank to major generalships over Arnold's head. This and subsequent slights by Congress embittered Arnold and may in part have motivated his later treason. Although he soon won promotion by his spectacular defense (1777) against William Tryon in Connecticut, his seniority was not restored. In the Saratoga campaign, his relief of Fort Stanwix and his brilliant campaigning under Horatio Gates played a decisive part in the American victory. He became (1778) commander of Philadelphia, after the British evacuation, and there married Peggy Shippen, whose family had Loyalist sympathies. In 1779 he was court-martialed because of disputes with civil authorities. He was cleared of all except minor charges and was reprimanded by Washington; nevertheless he was given (1780) command of West Point. He had already begun a treasonable correspondence with Sir Henry Clinton in New York City, and now arranged to betray West Point in exchange for a British commission and money. The plot was discovered with the capture of John Andre, but Arnold escaped. In 1781, in the British service, he led two savage raids : against Virginia and against New London, Conn. : before going into exile in England and Canada, where he was generally scorned and unrewarded.

== According to Dr. Scott Davenport, genealogist for the Davenport family, Francis Arnold was an Englishman who was listed as a transportee (along with a William Davenport, yet unidentified) in 1718 for land in New Kent (now Hanover) County, but was present in King William Co., VA records (the few surviving) along with his first wife Frances, as early as 1706. Francis Arnold was surely much older than his second wife Rachel, daughter of Benjamin Arnold, and was not a favorite of his father-in-law, for George Woodruff intervened with the Governor's Council in 1726 to keep Francis and Rachel, abetted by Anne Arnold, Sr., Benjamin's widow, from patenting 400 acres on Arnold's Run in Spotsylvania County that Benjamin had devised to his granddaughter Ann, daughter to Francis and Rachel. (By extrapolation, Ann was the eldest child, first daughter of Francis and Rachel - Grandfather Arnold was bypassing his son-in-law to bestow land upon Rachel's daughter.) Woodruff was granted the 400 acres in 1727 as trustee for Ann, and was charged by the Governor's Council to convey the land to Ann upon her reaching legal age or marriage, whichever came first. Francis Arnold and Rachel had occupied the land in question, described as being on Arnold's Run of East North East River in Spotsylvania County, as early as 1722, . The couple continued to live there until their deaths (Francis before 1760, Rachel after 1775), but held title only by a gift of 100 acres (from the 400 - acre patent) conveyed by William Davenport, son of Martin, Sr., and his wife Ann Arnold, daughter of Francis and granddaughter of Benjamin, in 1736.

== John Arnold and Barbara apparently first settled with his parents William Arnold, wife Mary (nee Davenport) in Laurens County, South Carolina, approximately twenty miles north on the north side of Saluda River, but by the time of John's death, they had joined John's family in Abbeville. After the death of his father-in-law Thomas Graves, Sr., and the death of the widow Ann Davenport Graves, William Pettus, Sr., bought the Graves plantation in Spotsylvania from his in-law heirs and moved thereon. He died there in 1798. His LW&T was made on 18 Sep 1795, probated on 4 Sep 1798, was witnessed by Sharp Smith, Peter Arnold, and Charles Dabney. His executors were sons William Pettus, Overton Hart Pettus, James Pettus, Joseph Pettus, and son-in-law William Graves. He left legacies to his wife [unnamed], sons Overton Hart Pettus; James Pettus; Joseph Pettus; nominated trustees: friends Jonathan Clarke, Edmund Clark, and Samuel Overton Pettus; and daughter Louisa. He identified his children as: Barbary Arnold, William Pettus, Nancy Graves, Susanna Davenport, Overton Hart Pettus, James Pettus, Joseph Pettus, and Louisa Pettus. (Spotsylvania County, VA, Wills, F:37)
