"Every person has two immediate parents, four ancestors in the second degree, eight in the third, and so the pedigree ascends, doubling at every step, till, in the twentieth (twenty-first*) generation, he has no fewer than 1,048,576 ancestors; and in the thirtieth, (thirty-first,*) 1,073,741,824, a number which exceeds the present population of the globe."

The above statement would be correct, provided there had been no intermarriages among a person's ancestors to the 21st and 31 generations. But, a single intermarriage in the fourth geneation, may make the number of ancestors in the next, and all succeeding generations, an eighth less; while one in the third generation may reduce it a quarter. Where intermarriages occur frequently, as they generally do among families that have long been located in one neighborhood, the number of one's ancesters is lessened very materially thereby. If we should carry our calculation back to our first parents, what an infinite number of ancestors, in that generation, we should be supposed to have had; and yet, there really would be but two of them.

*These generations are the twenty-first and thirty-first, as usually reckoned, counting the person himself the first generation, his parents the second, and so on; but they are really the twentieth and thirtieth generations of one's ancesters. "

== COX-is an English Patronymic Name (Patronymic surnames identify the father). In medieval times, the term cock was used to denote the young man who strutted proudly like a rooster, and it came to designate any young man. Cox is a version of Cock.
== And from Theresa Cox: "The first person known as "Cox" was a man that served under William the Conqueror in 1066. His name was Walter de Chilworth. He reminded his friends of a rooster the way he fought in battle. I found this in a history book at the Hendersonville, NC library"
== COCKS-son of Cock-British
== COCK-Cockerel or fatty or red -British, The British used it as a nickname to describe the ancestor's face, figure, temper, morals or habits.
== COCK-Heap or haycock-Welsh, The Welsh used this name to record localities or places where ancestors originated.
== COX-form of Cocks-British

== Harmon Cox was a member of the Regulator Movement; Whiskey Rebellion; Boston Tea Party. His father William was also a member of the Regulators. The term "Regulators" appears to have been applied to a military organization the object of which was to resist exorbitant taxes, unreasonable lawyers' fees and the like. Thompson's School History refers to the battle of Alamance--which was fought, May 16, 1771, near the Alamance River, between the "Regulators" and Gov. Tryon's militia.

== In Feb 1767, William, Juliatha, and other members of the family were disowned by the meeting for their involvement in the Regulator Movement. In 1771, William and Juliatha took their family to VA and settled on Chestnut Creek in Montgomery (now Grayson) county. They lived here only a short time before returning to NC, but by 1775, William Cox was back in VA and owned 593 acres south of present day Galax. The Coxes must have mended their differences with Cane Creek MM, as on 5 Dec 1778, they were granted certificates of removal which were accepted by New Garden MM on 27 Feb 1779. William was taxed in 1782 on five horses and fifteen head of cattle. It was probably early in 1789 that the family moved to a 145 acre tract of land in Hawkins County TN then on to Know County KY ten years later. It appears that William died in the summer of 1801, about 75 years of age.
