== 1480 Johann Faust is born in Knittlingen, Württemberg Germany. Knittlingen became a city in the 14th century as a possession of the Maulbronn Abbey. In 1534 the city became part of Baden-Württemberg. Knittel means sticks/clubs. He was a medical practitioner and had studied astrology and alchemy as well as philosophy. He must have travelled a lot as there were reports of him from all German regions. An unusual man, he made his fortune in the market place by selling horoscopes and occult items. This man is so spectacular that people talk a lot about him. Rumours and legends about him began while he was still alive. Reality mix with horrible fantasy. It was said that he was calling up the dead and practicing black magic. The exact date and the circumstances of his death are unknown. Most likely he was murdered. He later becomes the hero of several medieval legends, and later literary and operatic works about an old philosopher-magician (Faust or Faustus) who sells his soul to the devil (Mephistopheles or Mephisto) in exchange for knowledge and power. In 1587 a life of him appeared, in which are attributed to him many marvelous exploits and in which he is held up as an awful warning against the excessive desire for secular learning and admiration for antique beauty which characterized the humanist movement of the time. In this aspect the Faust legend is an expression of early popular Protestantism, and of its antagonism to the scientific and classical tendencies of the Renaissance.

== Johann Faust of Wolferborn, Hesse, Germany was born in the late 1500's. In the same area were two other villages, Bindsachsen and Rinderbugen. These villages are about 3 miles apart, and they oftern used the same church. The records are combined for Wolferborn and Bindsachsen. The Fausts were among the first to become Protestants in the area. Johan is listed as the father of a son, Hans, who was born in 1611, but his wife is not named. The family moved to Langenselbold, Hesse, Germany before Johann died.

== The early Foust/Faust families in America were German Reformed, a Calvanistic protestant group. In 1707 members of this religious group began migrating to the colonies in large numbers, and initially almost all of them went to Philadelphia. They settled Berks County, Pennsylvania, and became one part of the large group popularly known as "Pennsylvania Dutch" or Palatines. The Palatinate District was in the Upper Rhine area, claimed by both France and Prussia, and by local princes who were predominantly Catholic. The territorial and religious wars convinced the protestants that they would be better off outside the Palatinate. Some emigrants stayed in Holland and others were stranded in England and Ireland when unscrupulous "travel agents" took all their funds and gave them worthless boat tickets. Many immigrants made it to the colonies as the land in Pennsylvania became more expensive and more populated so the German Reformed members, along with Moravians and a few German Lutherans, moved south through Virginia into North Carolina and South Carolina.

== 1772 Goethe starts with his previous work "Urfaust".

== 1775 American War of Independence (to 1783); Battles of Lexington and Concord; Battle of Bunker Hill; Declaration of Independence (1776)

== By the time of the Revolution the northwest and northcentral portions of North Carolina were predominated by German-speaking immigrants. They kept their language for several generations, as there were so many of them and there was no need to convert to English. One writer said that Pennsylvania German was still spoken in "these parts of North Carolina" when he was there between 1820 and 1830.

The Brick Church, Guilford County, North Carolina
The church was originally known as "Der Klapp Kirche"
and is located in the eastern part of present day Guilford County, N.C.
Families of the founders and members over its 250 year history include
Albright, Clapp, Coble, Faust, Greeson, Hoffman, Ingle, May, Shepherd and Swing.

== The church was the center of life and social activity for this group of immigrants. As they migrated to the interior and southern areas of the colonies they were frequently traveling with another predominantly Calvinistic group, the Scotch-Irish. As their religious beliefs were quite similar, they frequently shared churches and ministers. In 1773, however, a minister was imported directly from Germany to North Carolina to enable the group to have a minister of its very own. This minister was named Rev. John Dietrich Aurandt. (Notes: See Harbaugh's, Fathers of the Reformed Church, III, p.180.)
