Gen02-Thomas Hall b: BET 1560 AND 1622

A deposition makes him born abt. 1617. He lived for awhile in Charlestown, MA, then moved to Dover, NH about 1648/49, when he received a 20 acre grant on the west side of the Back River. He lived on Dover Neck next to the meeting house lot (1652) and next to the Back River (the tidewater west of Dover Neck.) He was the first Deacon of the 1st church of Dover, as early as 1655. He was a lot layer as early as 1657 and as late as 1674. He received additional land grants of 30 and 2 grants for 100 acres from 1656-1658, and a lot of 20 acres in 1677. His name appears on the records often as buying or receiving grants of land. On 6/6/1659 he was chosen Town Clerk, but the court refused to give him oath. His signature does appears as town clerk from 1670-1679. In Jan 1685/86 a writ went out against him for embezzling the records belong to the town of Dover. This was during the Masonian Controversy when town hid their records to keep them out of the Court that was trying to help Mason get possession of Dover property. John Hall was a selectman in 1660. 2/1/1685 - Being in perfect health, but aged, he gives to his son Ralph 1/2 of his house and land, the rest to go to Ralph after John's death. (Scales)

I have found family trees showing that John was married to Bethia Farmer, Elizabeth Learned and Elizabeth Leighton (also spelled Layton). John Hall Jr. is shown as the son of all three depending on which tree you are looking at. It seems to be most likely that he is the son of one of the Elizabeths if John Sr. did marry Bethia in 1660. However, it is not Elizabeth Leighton (see below). (JB)

John Scales, "The Hall Family History of Dover, NH," pp. 375-390 as a great deal of Hall information, including above. Scales also states, "It does not appear who his wife was. She is mentioned but once in any deed; that is 23 June, 1662, and even then her name is not given. If the birth of 'Grace, daughter of John and Elizabeth Hall' refers to him, her name was Elizabeth. A deed from Richard and Elizabeth Pinkham, 25 Jan., 1704-05, to the Deacons son, Ralph speaks of the land as having belonged to "our grandfather, Thomas Leighton (Layton)." If this means that Thomas Layton was grandfather to Ralph Hall, the Deacon's wife could not have been Elizabeth Leighton: for she was the wife of Philip Cromwell, in 1671: and Thomas Layton's Will, 21, Sept. 1671 makes no Hall allusion." (p. 377) The reference to grandfather most likely refers to the grandfather of Richard and Elizabeth Pinkham and not to Ralph's grandfather.

There is a christening date of a male Hall on July 7, 1618 in Ecclesfield, Eng (parish record) that shows the father as John. This would be in agreement with the "Genealogy Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire." "Hall Gen, Halls of Dover, NH," p. 152.

Lived in Dover Neck and was a tavern keeper. Representative in NH Legislature 1695-96, he died while a member. He was baptized in Charlestown, MA in 1645. 1663- received bounty money with his father and thirteen others for killing a wolf. 1671-Constable of Dover. He lived on Dover Neck, Dec. 6, 1693; he gave bonds as tavern keeper; his sureties being Job Clements and Kingsley Hall. He was a land owner, probably from his father and his wife's father. Also Grants of 30 acres and 100 acres in 1693/4. 1697- Parson Pike's Journal says, April 28,1697 "John Hall, Sen., was drowned coming up the river in a little float, near Green Point."

John Hall 1700 Dover
Inventory of the estate of John Hall of Dover was taken April 13,1700 by Ralph Hall & John Tuttle, amounting to 104 pounds, 18 shillings. His sons, Thomas and Joseph, were appointed administrators of his estate on Dec. 1,1700; their mother, Abigail Downes, wife of Thomas Downes of Cocheco, (had remarried by then) having declined the trust on Nov. 26,1700. In the inventory, the real estate comprised his homestead with 10 acres at the upper end of Dover and sixty acres west of Back River. Bond of Thomas Hall & Joseph Hall, both of Dover, yeomen, with Thomas Tibbetts and Joseph Roberts both of Dover, yeomen, as sureties, Dec. 3, 1700, in the sum of L200, for the administration of the estate. A Warrant of July 12,1727, authorized Capt. Thomas Tibbetts and Lt. Joseph Roberts to appraise 100 acres of land not included in the inventory. Return of the valuation of the 100 acres was L65.0.0 on July 14,1727 [Probate Records, vol. 4, p. 226].

Charlestown, MA - currently nonexistent. It is part of Boston now.
Dover Neck - site of the pioneer town of Dover, now a farming district.
Cochecho- the present town of Dover.

Mother may have been Elizabeth Layton or Elizabeth Learned - Elizabeth Layton (Leighton) unlikely - no solid documentation - see notes on his father . One source also showed Bethia Farmer, but marriage appears to be after John's birth.
