== Needham Lee was one of the early settlers to come into Shelby County, Alabama after the land was claimed by the United States. He was a strong, virile man who fought in the Indian Wars. He had eighteen children by his wife Susan Bailey. Thomas Owens, in his "History of Alabama," said that Needham Sr. wakded from Gunter's Landing on the Tennessee River to his place of settlement in Shelby County. The Lee's cattle and possessions came with them from their former home in Hawkins County Tennessee. Several other families came to Shelby County and settled in the same area with the Lee's, including the Bailey's, Caldwell's, and Acton's. After Shelby became a county on February 7, 1818, Needham Sr. served a justice of the Shelby County Circuit Court, beginning with the third Court term (January 1819). The next court session in April was not held because there was no quorum. In the July 1819 court he again served as justice, but in October 1819 his name was not signed. He appears again as a justice in March, June, and September terms in 1820. In 1821, he was a justice at the January and March sessions. At the March 1821sessions he was appointed to a review jury to study "the nearest and best way for a road from the Shelby County Courthouse (at the town of Shelbyville, now Pelham) to intersect a road that may be laid off by the County of Jefferson leading from Elyton to Shelby Courthouse." However, he was not present when the review jury made its report in October 1821, having passed away prior.
== Needham was a Lieutenant in the Tennessee militia. He moved to Alabama shortly after the War of 1812. He disembarked at Gunter's Landing in 1816 and made his way to New Hope where he died and was buried on the family ground along with Tom Bailey and Zilpha. He was a pioneer family in Shelby Co., AL.and became the first justice of the county court and held that position until his death in the early 1820's. Had 195 grandchildren; more than 50 of whom fought in the Confederate Army.
== Susan is the daughter of Thomas Bailey and Sarah Griffin; sister of William Bailey who married Winifred Lee (see below).

Lee Marvin

== Lee Marvin was born on February 19, 1924. He served with the Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific and was awarded a Purple Heart for a wound that he received there. On his return, he became a movie actor and starred in a number of motion pictures until his death in Arizona on August 29, 1987. He is buried in Section 7-A of Arlington National Cemetery, not far from the Memorial Amphitheater and the Tomb of the Unknowns. Lee received an Oscar for his portrayal of a drunken gunfighter in the 1965 film Cat Ballou with Jane Fonda. He always played the rough-and-ready, hard-hitting tough guy, without any trace of the southern aristocracy from which he had sprung. Although Lee Marvin has two lines of descent from the Washington family, his mother was clearly more impressed with her relationship to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Or maybe she just thought "Lee" sounded better than "Washington Marvin" ...

== An American Revolutionary soldier, Henry III was a daring cavalry officer. He fought in the Carolina campaign after 1780. He was Governor of Virginia for 3 terms. "On April 11, 1809 he was arrested for debt and imprisoned in the Westmoreland County jail. He was arrested again before the year was over and sent to the Spotsylvania prison." There he wrote his memoirs. When he got out of prison in 1810 he moved his wife Ann Carter and their children into a little house on Cameron Street in Alexandria, Virginia. His memoirs were published in 1812 by a Philadephia publisher. In the late summer of 1813 after suffering near-fatal wounds and facial mutilation inflicted by a mob he went to the warmer climate of Barbados. He died in 1818 while in route home at Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia, the home of an old friend.

== Henry inherited Stratford Hall when he became of age in 1809 and was the last master of Stratford. After the death of his daughter in 1820, he had an affair with his sister-in-law, Elizabeth (his ward). Her new guardian sued him on Elizabeth's behalf. Henry was financially ruined and was forced to sell Stratford Plantation. The sale took place June 27, 1822. He and wife Anne moved to Paris about 1829, where he wrote a number of books.

== Robert was accepted to the United States Military Academy and graduated 2nd in his class. But perhaps greater than his academic success was his record of no demerits while being a cadet which today has still not been equaled. Following his graduation Lee, like most top classmen, was given a commission as an engineer. Lt. Lee helped build the St. Louis waterfront and worked on coastal forts in Brunswick and Savannah.
== In 1845 the War between U.S. and Mexico erupted. General Winfield Scott, overall U.S. Army commander, attached Captain Robert E. Lee to his staff. Lee was intrusted with the vital duties of mapping out the terrain ahead, dividing the line of advance for the U.S. troops, and in one case leading troops into battle. Lee was learning skills he would need 16 years later. There in Mexico Lee also met, worked with, and got a chance to evaluate many of those he would later serve with and against; James Longstreet, Thomas J. Jackson, George Pickett, and U.S. Grant.
== Following the Mexican War Lee returned to service as an army engineer. He spent most of this time near Washington D.C. and moved into Custis mansion (now overlooking the Arlington Cemetery). Thus was Colonel Lee was available for duty to put down a believed rebellion at Harper Ferry, Virginia the site of a United States Arsenal. Colonel Lee, and a young aide Lt. JEB Stuart, and a detachment of U.S. marines, were rushed by train to Harper's Ferry where they were able to capture radical abolitionist John Brown and his followers.
== Brown's attempt seemed to confirm all the worst fears of the deep south and when Abraham Lincoln was elected President South Carolina seceded and was quickly followed by 6 more deep southern states: Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. The old warrior General Winfield Scott asked Colonel Robert E. Lee to take command of the United States Army to put down the rebellion.
== Lee, however, offered his services to the newly elected President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis. Mr. Davis accepted them and Lee was made a general in CSA service. At first General Lee was more or less advisor to President Davis and the Secretary of War.
== General Lee's first campaign in what was to become West Virginia was less than a success. Command of the Eastern Army was divided between the hero of Fort Sumpter, P.G.T. Beauregard, and Joe Johnston who together won the first big battle of the East -- Bull Run (Manassas). Thus Joe Johnston was in command when George B. McClellan started his march on Richmond. When Johnston went down with wounds it was easy for Davis to replace him with General R.E. Lee who immediately took charge and attacked, trying to make up for his numbers with his audacity. In a series of continuous battles known as the 7 Days Battle Lee forced McClellan to retreat.

General Robert E. Lee

== Thus began the career of the Army of Northern Virginia which rose and fell with Lee's star. His boldness and grasp of strategy made him more than a match for every General President Lincoln sent against him until U.S. Grant defeated him through the Battle of Attrition.
== Lee's greatest victory was the Battle of Chancellorsville in May of 1863. Lee was faced with a larger army led by fighting Joe Hooker. Lee and his most trusted lieutenant, Gen. Stonewall Jackson, divided their forces and through a forced march around General Hooker fell on his exposed flank, rolling it up, and defeating the union forces yet again.
== This victory led Lee and Davis to consider a second invasion of the North. Lee's army would hopefully bring the Federal forces to bay and destroy them. They would then march on Washington to hand Lincoln a letter asking for recognition of the CSA. So with desperate hopes, and while still mourning the loss of Stonewall Jackson, Lee and Davis crossed the river and invaded Pennsylvania.
== The greatest land battle in the Western Hemisphere was fought at Gettysburg, Pa., on July 1, 2, & 3. The Army of Northern Virginia led by Lee, and the Army of the Potomac led by newly appointed General George Meade, hammered each other. On the 3rd day of battle General Lee hoping to end the war ordered the great frontal assault popularly known as Pickett's Charge. After the failure of the attack General Lee blamed only himself, but Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia fought on for 2 more years. General Lee surrendered at Appomatox Court House on April 9, 1865. This effectively brought the American Civil War to an end as other Confederate field commanders followed Lee's example
== Following the war Lee was almost tried as a traitor, but was only left with his civil rights suspended. Lee was offered the post of President of Washington University where he served until his death in 1870. The school was later renamed Washington and Lee. As a final note President Gerald Ford had Lee's citizenship restored.
== Mary was sole heiress to her father's estate, a house called Arlington over looking the Potomac, and great-granddaughter of President George Washington, as he had adopted her grandfather, John Parke Custis.

== The following is excerpted from the "The Lees of 17th Century York County, Virginia, By Catherine H.C. Seaman, Professor, Sweetbriar College, Virginia, published 1985- In 1634 the frontier area of Kiskiake became a part of the newly created Charles River County which lay on both sides of the Pamunkey (Charles, York) River. The area was an important one, being both a port and a site of official stores for tobacco inspection and repacking. The Lees arrived in Charles River County before 1640: Richard Lee testified in land patent as early as 1638; Capt. William Leigh was appointed High Sheriff in 1640, and Henry Lee witnessed land transaction by 1642. Henry Lee patented and bought 823 acres in this rather limited area, on the south side of the York, leaving 637 acres at his death. He was both planter and merchant, having over 60,000 pounds of tobacco in his inventory. He may have been the Henry Lee who took part in the warfare against the Pamunkey tribe after the Indian uprising of 1644. he was a justice serving on the bench with Richard Lee and other prominent men of York County, and 1652 became a member of the House of Burgesses. The bond of 1644/5 reveals a close relationship among Henry Lee, Richard Lee, and William Lee although the roots of the closeness, whether a near degree of kinship such as brothers, is not yet certain. Richard and Capt. William Lee patented their land for the most part on the north side of the York. William died by 1652 but Richard was longer lived, rising in political rank in the Colony as he acquired thousands of acres of land father north in the Northern Neck. Henry Lee married Marah Atkins whose mother (or she) may have been a Buck, the daughter of Rev. Richard Buck of Jamestown. Henry Lee's mother-in-law was Sibella Felgate who became the wife of several prominent men in the colony including Atkins, Capt. Robert Felgate who left her the income from his thousand or so acres of land; and Capt. Nicholas Martiau, the French Walloon who was the earliest ancestor of George Washington in the Colony. Henry Lee left three young children at his death who did not have the advantage of having him utilize his considerable means to see to their upbringing and education. The positions Henry Lee held of Justice and Burgess placed him near the top of society although he did not occupy the highest offices in the Colony or become the largest landowner in York County. However, his land holdings were considerably above that of the average person, owning 823 during his lifetime when the average amount of land owned in the county was 285 acres. He had a number of white indentured servants if all those whom he transported remained in his service. The term "Mr." by which he was referred was a title of respect not assigned to ordinary people at that time. Henry Lee survived the Indian massacre of 1644, many of the epidemics of disease, and the uncertainties of life on the frontier. At his death he left three children who needed guardians to look after their interests. He may also have been the father or near relative of John Lee and Henry Lee whom he transported from England. He left grandchildren, and great grandchildren who were to continue to live in York County for generations, and grandchildren who were to become the pioneers into Goochland and Albemarle County in Virginia, then a part of the "Old West."
