== Reid, Read, Reed-an epithet surname meaning "red haired" or "ruddy complexion". The spelling "red" is modern, like the pronunciation. The "e" was originally long, and in Chaucor MSS. the form is usually "Reed". In later English it was "Reede, Read, Read; in Scottish "Reid". Reid, Reed is also an Englishing of the Gaelic Ruadii.

== In "Reed-Read Lineage," 1909 by Ella Reed-Wright:
According to Jacob Whitmore Reed as cited by the above reference, "Reed, Read, Reid and many other ways of spelling the name, as Rede, Rheade, and Wrede, are all derived from the word Rhea, which had its origin in Phoenicia, having been used soon after the dispersion of the people in consequence of the confusion of language at Babylon." It also states, "About five hundred years before the Christian era, Ireland was divided into two kingdoms by the Greeks. The capital of one was called Ballyreda, which in English means Reedstown." Later it says "The Reeds are numerous from the fact that they are descended from a clan or nation and not from an individual. As the line of England and Scotland was constantly changing according to the valor and strength of parties, the Reeds became mixed up with both nations." The book goes on to say the Reed name can be traced, and found throughout Europe and Asia Minor.

STILL MORE:

== "Reid, Read, Reed. a surname meaning red-haired or ruddy complexion. In early records the name has an "e" on the end as in Reede.The name goes back to 1200 in Scotland and was probably in use much earlier. I believe it has a connection with the Vikings and is a description of their appearance. They were noted for red hair. In County Durham, England the name goes back to the beginning of the church records in 1500's and was well established here at a much ealier date as I have seen a record for a female Reed in the 1300's. This coast was invaded by both Vikings and Danes and they settled here. The report for Ireland 1890 covering all births shows that there were 206 entries for Reid none for Reed. 137 of these were in Ulster which suggests that these probably originated at one time from Scotland as far back as 1660's when the Plantations occurred."

== "Many inquiries have been made as to the change in the manner of spelling our family name, and as to when the spelling was changed from Reade or Read to Reed. I can only state that when I took up this work, I found the almost universal custom was to spell it Reed, but later I found some few of the connection, principally in the Taunton branch, and among those families who had removed to Mainee and New Hampshire, spelt it Read. There was, however, no uniform rule even among these, as in many cases where the father would spell it Read, the sons would spell it Reed, and it was so difficult to follow it in the families who preferred Read, that I concluded to adopt the uniform spelling of Reed. As to when the change took place, I should say in the 2nd generation, as it will be seen in the will of William Reed (of the Abington branch), that he spells his children's names in three different ways, viz.:Reade, Read and Reed, and on page 10 it will be noticed that to agreement which he entered into, he signed his own name William Reed, and from that time on documents signed by the Reeds are mostly signed Reed, and the town records refer to them in most instances as Reed. In the history of the Reeds, published in 1861, by J. Whitteemore Reed, he gives an interesting account of the "Origin of the name and history of the clans," in which he mentions 17 different ways in which the name is spelled, namely: "Reed, Read, Reid, Rede, Red, Rad, Rheade, Rheadus, Wrede, Whrede, Reda, Rada, Radha,Wada, Wrada, Raad, Ried, are all derived from Rhea, which had its origin in Phoenicia."

== Chappell Hill was established in 1847 by Mary Hargrove Haller, granddaughter of Robert Wooding Chappell. The town lay in some of the richest agricultural land in the State, and by 1860 a strong plantation economy based on cotton had developed. In 1860, eight Chappell Hill planters owned more than $100,000 in real and personal property. In this period up until the War in 1861, many settlers came to Chappell Hill from the depleted farms of older eastern states. Prospects appeared bright for the town and its wealth made possible the establishment, under the Methodist Church, of two colleges by 1856-the Chappell Hill Female College and Soule University.
== Many fine homes were built in the decade of the 1850’s, a number of which, fortunately, are still standing. These include the Browning Plantation, Waverly Plantation, the Stagecoach Inn, and the Lockhart Plantation. There are approximately 30 ante-bellum houses to be found in Chappell Hill today. Chappell Hill, Texas is located on Highway U.S. 290 between Hempstead and Brenham in Washington County.

== Years of war had taken an incalculable toll on a torn and tattered nation and the men and women who survived them. Throughout the newly reunited country, both North and South, ex-soldiers and former prisoners of war were returning to homes and farms changed and sometimes obliterated by years of hard economic times and/or neglect. For returning soldiers, coming home again was no simple matter of sitting down behind a desk or setting a plough in a furrow. Homecoming was an adjustment for former Union soldiers, but it was a devastating experience for the defeated men in gray who returned to homes in the South. The plantation system and its slave-labor economy were gone and with them went a way of life.
== A stroke of President Lincoln's pen had abolished the slavery-driven plantation system. In Chappell Hill, as in the Old South, large estates were broken up into smaller farms sometimes run by family members of the former owners or sold outright to outside interests. A few planters, determined to keep their land, contracted with former slaves or "freedmen." In these contracts, the freedmen agreed to plant and harvest the crops in exchange for lodging, food, and vages averaging $20 per year. Other large-scale farmers chose to hire European immigrants seeking passage to America.
== In June of 1866, just one year after the close of the War Between the States, a fascinating reenactment of the Age of Chivalry took place in Chappell Hill. According to the original reporter, thousands must have gathered to enjoy a day of horsemanship and marksmanship followed by an evening of feasting, dancing, and "displays of chivalrous courtesy."
== In 1867, Chappell Hill suffered a Yellow Fever epidemic. This natural catastrophe may have sounded the death knell for Chappell Hill in its quest for growth ...
