== This surname is not uncommon in the Mearns, and is an old one in the parish of Fetteresso. John Syllar was tenant of the garden of the Hospital of Dundee, 1464 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 147). James Silvir, "succentor Glasguensi," appears as witness in 1497 (REG., p. 496), and may be James Siluer, rector of Durisdere, 1504 (Simon, 92). William Silver de Stobo was a charter witness, 1506 (REG., 485), and another William Siluer or Silwer was a cleric in Aberdeen, 1540, and chaplain of Folaroull, 1546 (REA., II, p. 113; I, p. 431). The name Silver on a tomb in the Calton cemetery, Edinburgh, near the Stevenson 'lair' probably suggested to Robert Louis Stevenson the surname of his 'Long John Silver' in Treasure Island. The information above was quoted from: "The New York Public Library, The Surnames of Scotland" p. 726.
Of the Anglo-Saxon surnames of England few surnames are more distinguished than Silver.
In a careful professional research of such ancient manuscripts as the Domesday Book compiled in 1086 A.D., by Duke William of Normandy, the Ragman Rolls (1291-1296), a record of homage rendered to King Edward 1st of England, the Curia Regis Rolls, The Pipe Rolls, the Hearth Rolls, parish registers, baptismals, tax records and other ancient documents researchers found the first mention of the name Silver in Herfordshire where they were anciently seated as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was first French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. But Saxon surnames survived and the family name was first referenced in the 13th century when they held estates in that shire.
Many different spellings were found in the archives researched. The name Silver occurred in many manuscripts. From time to time the surname was shown spelled as Silvar, Silber, Silvers, Silvars, Silverthorn, and these variations in spelling occurred within the history, between father and son. There were many reasons for these spelling variations, some deliberate; some accidental.
The Anglo Saxons were a fair skinned people who came to England about the year 400 led by General/Commanders Hengist and Horsa. After 600 years of Saxon rule of England, the Normans, invaders from France, achieved victory at the Battle of Hastings. Many Saxon lands were forfeited to Duke William and his invading Norman nobles. The Saxons became oppressed under Norman rule, and some moved northward to the midlands, Lancashire and Yorkshire, even into Scotland.
The family name Silver emerged as a notable English family name in the county of Herfordshire where they were anciently seated. They later branched to Hampshire where they were seated at Ropley. They also branched to Winchester. In Somerset they adopted the name Silverthorn when Roger Silverthorn held estates there in 1327. They also branched to Norwich. For those interested in further research of the early history of the surname we recommend the ancient Harleian Manuscripts which are in the archives of the British Museum. These Manuscripts are a Catalogue of the Herald's Visitations between 1510 and 1600 et.seq. Some histories go back to the Magna Carta Barons and earlier to Hastings. This distinguished surname Silver is recorded in MS 1544 (folio 56b) and others. From their early beginnings, for the next few centuries, the family name also acquired other estates or manors as branches established themselves throughout England. Several major conflicts, the Wars of the Roses, the Cromwellian found them sometimes to be in opposing camps with conflicting interests. Many changes in spelling the surname were accidental, some were deliberate, to declare a cause, or to distance a branch from the main stem. Sir Bartholemew Silver was seated in Hertfordshire about 1350. Notable amongst the family at this time was the Silver family of Hertforshire.
During the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries England was ravaged by religious and political conflict. Puritanism, Catholicism, Royalist and parliamentary forces shed much blood. Many families were freely "encouraged" to migrate to Ireland, or to the "colonies".
In Ireland, settlers became known as the Adventurers for land in Ireland. They undertook to maintain the Protestant faith. As early as 1172 branches of certain family surnames moved to Ireland with the invasion of Strongbow, still more were encouraged to be a part of the Plantation of Ulster in the early 17th century [James Silver Family History]. Later, the Cromwellian settlements moved other families. There is no evidence of this family surname migrating to Ireland but this does not preclude individual settlements.
The New World held many attractions for the adventurous. They sailed aboard overcrowded ships which were pestilence ridden, sometimes 30% to 40% of the passenger list never reaching their destination, their numbers reduced by dysentery, cholera, small pox, typhoid or the elements.
Amongst the settlers which could be considered kinsfolk of the surname Silver, or had a variable spelling of that family name was the name represented in many forms and recorded from the mid 17th century in the great migration from Europe. Migrants settled in the eastern seaboard from Newfoundland, to Maine, to Virginia, the Carolinas, and to the islands. The treacherous trek from the port of entry, also claimed many victims as many joined the wagon trains to the prairies or to the west coast. During the American War of Independence, many loyalists to the Crown made their way north to Canada about 1790, and became known as the United Empire Loyalists. More recent notables of this surname, Silver, include many distinguished persons, embracing many notable personalities who have contributed to the society on both sides of the Atlantic.

== Captain James Silver emigrated from Scotland in the early 1700's, was one of the first permanent settlers in the Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania, as early as 1724. In 1734 he donated 7.2 acres of land to the Presbyterian Church to hold church services by a spring bubbling out of the ground. 'Meeting House Springs' was the first church west of the Susquehanna. The church and the township were named in his honor. In 1736, he was a tax collector in Pennsborough. He was a captain in the French and Indian War (Association Regiment of Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, 1747-1748, Benjamin Chambers, Colonel). He was a grand juror at the quarter sessions court in Shippensburg (1750). As one of the first permanent settlers in the valley, he was the area's first road engineer and active in the erection of Cumberland County.

Silvers' Spring, 1736. James Silvers [added the "s"] came to the valley no later than 1733, having been appointed one of six viewers (informal surveyors) to lay out a road from Harris' Ferry toward the Potomac. Mr. Silvers and his wife, Hannah, took out a "warrant" on a tract of 532 acres including the 17 acres which comprise the church grounds. Located on our grounds (just a walk down the steps from the lower parking lot) is the spring which gave our church, and the township, their names. In the early years, our church was known simply as "the people over the Susquehanna". One writer, describing the early settlers in what is now Cumberland County had this to say about the Scotch-Irish who were among the first white people to come here: "No matter how far they ventured into the wilderness, there they built a schoolhouse and a church." For half a century beginning about 1730 they formed a large percentage of the total population in this valley. By the time Germans, Swiss and others arrived, the Scotch-Irish had established settlements and organized churches at Silver Spring, Meeting House Spring, Big Spring and Middle Spring."

== James, colonist to America, was one of the first permanent settlers in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania ( about 1725.) He gave the site for Silver Spring Presbyterian Church, six miles from Carlisle, and was a leading spirit in securing the erection of Cumberland County, and served with the rank of captain in the French and Indian war. He died in 1776. His son, Francis Silver, Sr., born in 1740, was a large owner and operator of mills in Cumberland Valley, and took his father’s place in business and in ecclesiastical affairs. He was a soldier of the Revolution, and his mills helped feed the Continental Army. In 1798 he moved with his family to Berkeley County, Virginia, where he died in 1820.

== History of Cumberland County:
(p. 30) "James Laws lived next to Croghan, opposite to the mouth of Silvers' Run. At a spring adjoining on the south was James Silvers, from whom the stream and spring were named. He had settled there with his wife, Hannah, before 1733, and owned 500 acres of land or more; was public-spirited and honorable; has no descendants bearing his name." [note: last statement can't be true.]

== A History of Mechanicsburg and the Surrounding Area:
(p.29) Influence of the Trindle Springs Settlement: It was settled by William Trindle in the spring of 1728. Trindle must have been acquainted with James Silver as he settled at the head of Silver's Spring. p.62 Silver's Spring Presbyterian Church: James Silver staked out a tomahawk tract of 532 acres just below the head of the spring that bears his name. It includes land to the east and west of the run as far as the junction with the Conodoguinet Creek. The fact that his deed does not cover the head of the spring is evidence that either Frank Stephens, an Indian trader, or some Indian chief, was occupying the location. To further legalize the ownership of this tract, a Bunston License was granted to Silver in 1735. The western border of Silver's tract intersected the Great Road, from which a road was established, a Church Road, which led to the first log church building at the side of the stream. This log structure functioned as both church and school until James Silver received a grant for additional acreage south and east of the spring. On August 15, 1744 Silver purchased 240 acres above the head of the spring and deeded 7.2 acres to the Presbyterian Charge in fee simple for the erection of a church. p.86 Monroe Township: By Jan. 27, 1750 Cumberland County, named after Cumberlandshire, England, was officially designated as the sixth county in Pennsylvania. It was separated from Lancaster County by petition to the Assembly by James Silver and William Magaw.

Standing: Hiram Henshaw Sidwell Silver, William Ernest Silver, Anne Beall Silver,

== The only son of Francis and Anne (Beall) Silver was Zephaniah Silver, grandfather of Senator Gray Silver. He was born at Bunker Hill May 24, 1805, and lived at White Hall, Frederick County, where he dispensed a generous hospitality. He married in 1834 Martha Jane, accomplished daughter of Captain Hiram and Mary (McConnell) Henshaw. Spring Hill, her birthplace, was founded by her great-grandfather, John Henshaw, in 1766. The first chapter of the D. A. R. in West Virginia, organized in 1899, was named in honor of her grandfather, Capt. William Henshaw. Martha Jane Silver, a granddaughter of Mrs. Martha Jane Henshaw Silver, was a chapter member and regent of the chapter 1901-04 and 1914-19. Hiram Henshaw was a captain in the War of 1814. Zephaniah Silver was a gentleman farmer, following no other occupation at any time of his life. True to the aristocratic traditions of his class, he was an ardent old line Whig, taking little or no part in politics after the disruption of that party. The family were all Presbyterians, James Silver, the emigrant ancestor, having been largely instrumental in the establishment of the old Donegal presbytery, the first organization of its kind in the Cumberland valley.

== Colonel Francis, familiarly know as Col. Frank Silver, was educated in private schools and was in Company B of the First Virginia Cavalry from the outset of the war until the surrender at Appomattox, being severely wounded at Roods (Rude's?) Hill. He was reared a federalist in politics, but after the war voted as a democrat, was a Presbyterian, and was a gentleman of the old school, courtly in manners, handsome and generous. Like most Valley Virginia of his day, his business interests were mainly those of a farmer. He was a director of the Old National Bank and of Shenandoah Valley Agriculture Society of Winchester. He took an active part in the reconstruction of his native state. He married Mary Ann Gray, who was born on the Gray homestead, later known as Grayville. She was descendant of John Gray (1746-1816), who came from Scotland 1765 and settled in Berkeley County, was a government surveyor, acquired a large landed estate, and in 1787 laid out the village of Gerardstown. His oldest son, James William Gray, born in 1811, married Martha Jane Gilbert, daughter of Edward Gilbert, Jr., and their oldest child was Mary Ann. The parents of both Colonel Silver and his wife Mary Ann Gray, were representatives of the best type of Valley Virginians of protestant faith, intelligent and prosperous, living on large plantations of considerably more than a thousand acres and until after the War of 1861-5 surrounded by a large number of well cared for and contented servants. This property was devastated, or entirely swept away, by that dreadful conflict between the North and South. The Silver and Gray plantation homes were both situated in the fairest part of the beautiful and far famed Shenandoah Valley, the immediate scene of the fiercest conflict between the contending armies during those four years of dreadful warfare.
