== Edmund was admitted Vicar of Upchurch in Kent, June 25, 1560. He was a preacher. Although some of
his twelve sons probably died in infancy, sufficient remained to tax a man of such modest means,
and Edmund's burden was increased by the early death of his wife. Most of his boys were sent to sea;
one, Edward, died at Upchurch, and the youngest, Thomas, was placed with a Mr. Thomas Baker of London.
By the time of his death Edmund had them off his hands, and willed most of his possessions to
his youngest son, Thomas, bequeathing nothing to the others.
Mrs. Drake's father is Richard Mylwaye.

== Sir Francis [the famous sea captain] died without issue, and in his will, dated April 10, 1661,
after providing for his other relatives, he bequested the bulk of his property to "Francis Drake,
sonne and heire of Thomas Drake (his oldest brother), in case God blesse me not with an heire
of my owne body." In this will, as shown in the following extract, he entailed the property,
willing it to "Francis Drake, on trust, to preserve the contingent estate herein lymitted,
and after the death of the said Francis Drake, to the use of the First issue male of the said
Francis Drake and heires, males, of the body of such issue, the remainder to the second, third,
foureth, fifte, and every other issue, male, of the said Francis Drake, and the respective
heires males of every herir bodyes, in order, and remainder successivelye, according to the
seniority of birth and such sonne and sonnes; the remainder for want of such issue, to John Drake,
my brother, and the heires, males, of his body; and for want of such issue, to the remainder to
my brother Wm. Drake, and the heires, males of his body; and for want of such issue, to my brother,
Joseph Drake, and the heires, males, of his body, the revercon or remainder in fee to my right herirs."
On this clause in Sir Francis's will, in later days, when his nephew Francis's line became extinct,
the Drakes in America who claimed to descendants of the brothers John and Joseph,
mentioned in the will, based their claim on the property.
Sir Francis Drake's first marriage was to Jane Bampfylde, daughter of Sir Amiar Bampfylde. Her brother John Bampfylde married
Sir Francis Drake's sister Elizabeth. The fathers each paid the other father 500# for the bride.

== Joseph attended Oxford. His career there had not been brilliant, but if he had acquired no bad habits his firends
had grounds for satisfaction. He settled in the country on his younger son's portion and never
distinguished himself in any remarkable way. In Joseph's will he bequeathed the Star Jewel, which had somehow come into his possession,
to his great-nephew, Francis Henry Drake, eldest son of Sir Francis Drake, and thus his heirloom was kept in the family.

== Francis with two of his brothers, Joseph and Bampfield, his wife Mary and their son, James, then six years old (1733) came to America from England in 1733 and first settled in Surry County, Virginia.
His brothers Joseph and Bampfield were scalped by Indians (they left no issue). At the same time James, son of Francis, was captured by the Indians. For a large reward, he was delivered to his father by friendly Indians.
Later, while prospecting in Austin Sledges in the woods near where his brothers had been killed, Francis was shot at by Indians. Being disgusted with this section of the country, he moved his family to Edgecombe County, now Nash County, North Carolina. There he was granted a tract of land - 2000 acres of which was in Swift County.
He and his wife Mary were buried near Drake's Bridge, Swift Creek, Nash County, North Carolina.
This Francis Drake is not to be confused with Francis Drake, son of Richard who owned land in Orange and Chatham Counties in NC.

== Samuel served 3/24/1781 under Captain Edwardson the Militia from Montgomery Co.,VA. He was listed by the DAR as performing patriotic service during the Revolutionary War.
The Drakes first appear on the New River about 1769 when William Preston surveyed 95 acres for Samuel Drake, under the terms of the Loyal Company.
The tract adjoined Persimmon Bottom on the New River (Preston Family Papers,Library of Congress,581).
Samuel Drake also claimed 400 acres on both sides of the New River which he settled in 1776, but gave up his claim in 1784.
He appears to have lived on Macks Creek, where his farm adjoined the Persimmon Bottom and contained 260 acres which surveyed
