== Holt History in Alamance County, North Carolina by Don Bolden, Times-News
While the community bears the same name as the county in which it is located, the village of Alamance certainly has an identity of its own, rich in a that had its origin in 1771 to the sound of gunshots. It was on a plain a few miles west of the present village that the War of Regulation climaxed in the Battle of Alamance. The fight was between the settlers in the back country of the Carolina colony and the militia of royal Gov. William Tryon. The settlers were angry about illegal taxation, confiscation of goods and other government actions that had an adverse effect on them. Tryon camped his forces on Alamance Creek, near the site of the present village, before and after that fight May 16, 1771. Then in 1837, 30-year-old E. M. Holt gave in to a fascination for machinery and took a step that changed his life and the life of an industry. Holt opened a small cotton factory on the banks of Alamance Creek, and in doing so, he planted the seeds for a textile empire that would make him among the wealthiest men in North Carolina. He built the mill along with houses for employees and a company store, and the village of Alamance was born. It would be almost 150 years later before the village would be incorporated as a municipality, however. In 1853, a Frenchman came to the mill and showed the Holts how to dye the cloth they produced, and Alamance Plaids became a reality - a very profitable reality. Holt's sons moved into other parts of the county and opened mills, and the economic impact of those mills remains today. The Holt family home just south of the village is the site of the Alamance County Historical Museum, and members of the Holt family are buried there. The mill at Alamance burned in 1871, but it was rebuilt and operated until 1926. John Shoffner worked in that mill as a boy, making 15 cents a day. Later he invested in a small building and some knitting machines and started producing hosiery. In 1927, he was able to buy the Holt mill and the entire village of Alamance. He built a water plant, several new mill houses and a large boardinghouse. By 1929 he was operating Standard Hosiery Mills. After Shoffner's death in 1944, his company became a part of Kayser-Roth Hosiery Co., and that firm continues today as a major hosiery producer. There have been changes in industrial operations in the village over the years, and new homes have been added, but Alamance remains a village - not a town nor a major urban area. It was incorporated in 1979.
