== Northampton County was formed in 1741 from Bertie County and was named in honor of James Crompton, Earl of Northampton, an English nobleman. It is in the northeastern section of the State and is bounded by the State of Virginia and Halifax, Bertie and Hertford counties. The present land area is 533.49 square miles and the 1990 population was 20,798. In 1806 Atherton was established as the courthouse. Jackson is currently the county seat.

== Parker Milton Levy was born in 1819, the second child and eldest son of James Levy. As a young man he left the home in Nashville, Tennessee, where he and 10 other children were born. He came overland by wagon with two young men heading for Texas grazing lands. He was in Milam County, Texas in 1842. In 1843 he married Mary Elizabeth McNutt, daughter of Major Robert McNutt who owned land in Milam, Burleson, Lee, Williamson and Bell Counties resulting from his service in the War of 1812 and the war with Mexico.
When Bell county was created in 1850 Parker Levy settled his family on 276 acres six miles south of Nolanville which had been owned by his father-in-law Major McNutt. In April 1858, Mary Elizabeth died in childbirth. She was buried on the homeplace, creating the Levy Cemetery. Later parker sold part of this land including the cemetery to the Burris family. The cemetery became known as the Burris Cemetery. When Stillhouse Hollow Lake was formed, the cemetery was moved to Cedar Knob Cemetery.
