txt QUESTIONABLE LINK: It is apparent that Francis and John of Augusta County, Virginia were not children of Alexander of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (they came to America in 1728/1729). It is mostly certain that Francis and John of Augusta County were brothers. However, they were probably closely related to the Lancaster County, PA McCown family. Alexander of Lancaster county, had a son James who did settle in Augusta County!

Note: MCCOWN HISTORY: Originally name was Colquhoun. In the reign of Alexander II, Colquhoun acquired from the Earl of Lennox lands of the Culchome, adapted the name of the lands and the surname. (1214-1249 in Scotland). About 1610 Alexander Colquhoun changed the family name to 'Mac Cowan' (he was a member of the Scotts Parliament).

Note: NAME: Some common spellings found include: McKown, McGown, McCone, McGowan (or en), McCowen, MacCown, or M'Cown.

Note: ANCESTRY: Accoriding to Sam McCown, the McCowns were from Donegal County, (but unsubstantiated), but could very well have been from Londonderry.

Note:

CHILDREN: Moses, John, and Francis. May have also had another son William, whom Francis was accused of planning to send over to the Carolinas.?? RESIDENCE: Settled on 837 acres of land, of the 92,300 acres panted to Borden Sr., to him on 6 November 1739 on the South side of the North Branch of the James River in present Rockbridge County, Virginia.
