HISTORY: HEROES, SCANDAL AND INTRIGUE

Famed for its Market, which has been held in the town for over 500 years, Chorley has a fascinating past. There are impressive buildings, beautiful churches and many stories to be told of heroes, scandal and intrigue.

Cromwell forgets!
After the battle of Preston, evidence suggests Oliver Cromwell spent the night at Astley Hall - The popular story goes that Cromwell left in such haste that he forgot his boots - which remain to this day on display at Astley Hall.

Arise Sir Loin.
King James I on the way back from Scotland stayed at Hoghton Tower, during a night of Merriment the King was so impressed with the feast before him that he knighted the joint of beef which from then on became known as "Sir Loin"

Bones of Contention:
Legend says the Bones of St Laurence were brought to Chorley by Sir Rowland Standish on his return from the crusades. The bones still displayed at the Town Centre Church of the same name.

Bronze Age Settlement:
A chance find of a pottery urn by a farmer in 1963 at Astley Hall Farm, led to the discovery of evidence of a bronze age settlement in Chorley much earlier then originally thought. The findings can be seen in Astley Hall

Spooky goings on:
Hoghton Tower is reckoned to be the 2nd most Haunted House in the country.

Famous sons include Sir Henry Tate, of Tate and Lyle and founder of the Tate Gallery and Miles Standish the Gallant Hero and Captain of the pilgrim fathers, founders of America

First Order at the Bar:
The Black Horse Pub, in Limbrick is said to be the second oldest in the country.
