== Winnipeg is located at The Forks (where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet), and its name is Cree for "muddy water." The area was a meeting place for aboriginal people for thousands of years. In 1738, Pierre de La Verendrye began a fur trading settlement at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. The settlement was known as the Red River Colony. The Red River Colony was reknowned for its fur trade until the 1880s, when grain production became more important than fur trapping in western Canada. In 1812, the first colonists (permanent white settlers) arrived. However, the Red River Valley was already populated by the Metis. The Metis were descendants of the French fur traders and their aboriginal wives. In 1826, a flood destroyed the existing colony, forcing the settlers to rebuild. Henry McKenny built a store in 1862, and by 1866, the name of Winnipeg was used for the areas surrounding the store. The area was incorporated as a city in 1873, with a population of more than 1,800 people. Winnipeg grew quickly, partly because it was near a fort. In 1870, there were 30 buildings in Winnipeg. By 1873, there were more than 900 buildings. Winnipeg residents actively sought immigrants from Ontario by publishing books and newspaper articles about western Canada. They sent advertisements for the city to England and Europe in 10 different languages. In 1888, they employed immigration agents to encourage people to farm near Winnipeg. By 1896, thousands of immigrants were coming to Winnipeg. By 1901, the Winnipeg City census population had grown to more than 42,000.
