**The Grays of Barbados Origin Displayed: Scottish

The first family in ancient Scotland to use the name Grays was part of a tribe called the Boernicians. Grays is a name for a person who had gray hair. In Scotland, the surname Grays actually came from two different derivations. As a nickname, it came from the Gaelic word riabhach, which means gray. As a habitational name, it derived from the place named Graye, in Calvados. This place-name came from the Gallo-Roman personal name, Gratus, which means welcome or pleasing. Grays is therefore a nickname and a habitation name, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. Nicknames form a broad and miscellaneous class of surnames, and can refer directly or indirectly to one's personality, physical attributes, mannerisms, or even their habits of dress. Habitation names are one of several types of local names, including: topographic surnames, which could be given to a person who lived beside any physical feature, such as a hill, stream, church or type of tree. Habitation names form the other broad category of surnames that were derived from place-names. They were derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads. Other local names are derived from the names of houses, manors, estates, regions, and entire counties. Members of the Grays family were first found in Northumberland. Spelling variations include: Gray, Grey, Groy, Croy, Graye and others. First found in Northumberland where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Francis Gray who settled in Virginia in 1635 with his wife Alice; Robert Gray settled in the Barbados in 1680 with his wife and servants; David, Edward, Henry, James, John, Joseph, Martha, Patrick, Richard, Samual, Thomas and William Gray, all settled in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1860. Although it was probably originally inhabited by Arawaks, it was uninhabited when the English expeditionaries first settled there in 1627 (1605, according to local tradition). Barbados remained a British colony until independence was granted in 1966. During the 19th cent. it was the administrative headquarters of the Windward Islands, but in 1885 it became a separate colony.

However one should note that the will for Hannah's father Robert Benson gives her as Hannah Nowlan.

== William's will was dated 15 of October 1769, Menallen Twshp, York Co, PA. It appears he died c1770 Hannah Benson moved to Frederick Co., VA after he died. She was expelled from the Goshem Monthly Meeting for marriage by a hirling and without the blessing of the overseers. Most were Quakers, William was not & Hannah was complained against for marriage out of union. William fought in the Revolutionary War. The name is spelled Newland in the service papers. Hannah received a pension from the government. York County is also mentioned a being the place where he lived, along with Chester County.
