I remember your grandpa "Vic" and how he loved you (Jeff) and all the grandkids. But he was so proud of you and would hoist you in his arms to take you outside to visit the dog Rags or play basketball. His pipe always smelled wonderful and I was always in awe of him. His kindness just sort of overwhelmed me. He would always tease my sister and I about who our boyfriends were but he knew I wasn’t into liking boys, I was a tomboy who saw boys as challenging. I was always outside playing baseball or basketball. Your Beeta (my Aunt Heloise) always had candy dishes around and they were always full. My mother would lecture us before we visited not to touch the candy or even look at it. I am sure it was obvious to your grandpa that we had been firmly taught not to touch that bowl. He would always sneak a few pieces in his sleeve or pocket and nonchalantly find the right moment to pass them to me, one at I time so I wouldn’t get caught. Then he would load me up with some right before we left. I always made sure I had an outfit with pockets or I would grab a Kleenex, wrap it and stuff it down my pants! He figured this out and would pre-wrap it to help me out. I don’t know when it was that I realized he was a saint or angel, but I was very young.
He was a wonderful man who could always make anyone feel so welcomed. He always asked me how many boyfriends I had—I was not a cute kid so I’d get a little embarrassed. He would pick up on that and began to ask me about sports and school, etc. I always felt he was like an angel or a saint because he was so handsome, gentle and kind. He had a special way with kids. I remember how he was so proud of all his grandkids. But a very vivid memory was when you were in school (you were around 4 or 5) and you would roll or arm crawl on the floor. Well, you had a cute teacher and you and some buddies had the perfect view up your teacher’s dress! You giggled so hard the tears went down your face. Your grandpa got the biggest kick out of your adventure. He tried to chastise you but the scolding was met with giggles from you and your grandpa. I remember the expressions on both your face and your grandpa’s. He was so proud of you! He thought Tracy was quite the girl, too. He loved her independence and antics. She used to climb up a metal backstop on the hitting mound at the baseball park and even did this with a cast on her. Your mom was always keeping an eye out for her. She was so spunky!”

When we lived in Hastings, we lived 6 blocks from St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and School where we all went. In those days we went to Mass every morning except Saturday. I was one of the younger ones, and I remember being scurried up and out each morning without breakfast, because you had to have fasted 3 hours before receiving communion. We'd get dropped off in front of the Church and head in. Afterwards, there were doughnuts and milk for sale in the cafeteria for the Mass goers. None of us sat together; we sat in our class areas. We would walk home from school at the end of the day.
My big sis Margie would take us to the Museum, which is really a good one in Hastings. We spent many many Saturdays cruising the Museum. I can still smell it. They actually did a lot of preparing of animals right there in one of the front side rooms and the smells were taxidermish, so to speak.
Margie had a pony tail then and bangs. She had bobby socks and skirts with slips underneath. She would go to Aunt Renee's farm each summer for awhile and was really close friends with Karen. I remember when I was really little, them making mud pies in one of the open sheds. Lonny would at times play games with them. Once when they were playing "find Lonny in the corn fields," he laid down and played dead and as they were scuffling through the high stalks they saw what they thought was a dead man laying and I remember them screaming back to the farm house and alarming Uncle Longin so much that he went looking for the dead man.
Our house in Hastings was filled with teenagers in the evenings. Tom, Vic, Jean, Jerry and Albert and often many other friends of the guys. If there was a basketball game, we all went. My brothers were the stars. When I was 8, Vic used his own work money to buy the family a TV. Our first. It changed the house from a "radio house" to a "TV house." We were all mesmerized.
I remember Wags, our small black cockerspaniel who had babies 3 times, and I watched all births, and we usually had at least one cat and then of course, Timmy, the blue parakeet who was brilliant. He said things like "Have you done the dishes yet?" and "Merry Christmas!" and had the run of the house a lot. He loved to swoop down on my paperdolls after I had neatly made my paperdoll houses and everything would fly as he came in for his wing attack. Ornery bird. We had to leave him behind when we moved to California and that was really hard.
To move across country was rough and we were packed into the back seat of the Buick for 3 days. UGH!”
